Zaratan – Contemporary Art

On Rua de São Bento, in Estrela, Zaratan – Arte Contemporânea works as a structure for the creation, production and dissemination of contemporary art in Portugal. It opened its doors in November 2014, legally constituted by artists as a non-profit cultural association, with the aim of promoting new ways of interacting with artists and non-artists beyond the institutional channels. To stimulate creativity and generate valid cultural processes, it runs a heterogeneous and mostly free programme which, alongside its exhibition calendar, includes video screenings, concerts, presentations, workshops and performances, as well as artist residencies and a shop. It champions interdisciplinarity and aims to foster a deeper understanding of present-day and independent artistic languages. The Gallery and the Multiple Space stay open to the public when events take place outside normal hours. The official website announces, however, that the space is closed for works: the final exhibition, “Perder a Conta” (“Losing Count”), ran from 10 to 18 October 2026, and a crowdfunding campaign, “From a Ruin to a Cultural Centre”, supports the transformation of the building. No reopening date is given, so it is advisable to check the official page before visiting.
