In a warehouse on Rua Fernando Palha, in Marvila, Underdogs is a cultural platform and gallery devoted to urban-inspired contemporary art, working with Portuguese and international artists. The project was born in 2010, when the artist Alexandre Farto, known as Vhils, proposed to the gallerist Vera Cortês an exhibition giving a voice to emerging artists from graffiti and street art; the first show brought together ten Portuguese artists at the Vera Cortês Art Agency in Lisbon, followed by another in Porto in 2011. In 2012 Vhils and the curator Pauline Foessel outlined in Shanghai the future of Underdogs as a permanent platform based in Lisbon, and the present space opened in 2013 with a solo exhibition by the American duo Cyrcle. Besides the gallery, the project combines a public art programme with the sale of exclusive artist editions: the Underdogs Art Store, opened in the city centre in 2014, moved to Marvila in 2019, where the Underdogs Capsule, a small space for new talent and experimentation, was also created. On reaching its tenth anniversary in 2020, Underdogs counted more than 70 exhibitions, nearly 50 public artworks and over 250 editions by 157 artists and collectives of more than 20 nationalities. In 2023 it staged the major group exhibition 'Everything is New for Urban(R)Evolution' at the Cordoaria Nacional.
