Professor Marcello Caetano Museum Room – Faculty of Law, University of Lisbon

On the second floor of the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon, in the University City, the Professor Marcello Caetano Museum Room is a small museum space devoted to the work and memory of the jurist, law professor and influential Portuguese politician. It was set up in 2006 in a collaboration between his family, the Faculty of Law and the Silva Dias architecture studio, which designed the space. In a room of about 30 square metres with a black background, the wooden slats of the ceiling contrast with the side walls, cut by very deep built-in shelves, and with a central display table shaped like large light boxes; photographic reproductions at the back of the shelves create an illusion of depth. The collection includes books, manuscripts, press cuttings, personal objects and papers, academic dress and a set of decorations from several countries, among them the Order of the Tower and Sword, the Order of Isabella the Catholic and the British Order of St Michael and St George. Other highlights are a bronze bust, the gown he wore as rector of the University of Lisbon, three tassels from foreign universities and a section devoted to Brazil, where he died in 1980. Visits are possible only on Tuesdays and Thursdays, in two time slots.
