RTP – Radio and Television Museum Collection
Next to the RTP studios in Marvila, the Radio and Television Museum Collection displays some of the most emblematic pieces from the vast museum holdings of Portugal's public broadcaster, a record of the history of both media in the country. The route, arranged chronologically, is divided into two areas. The radio area, with around a hundred objects, opens with some of the oldest pieces in the collection, showing the development of long-distance communication and sound reproduction, from the Morse telegraph to the phonograph, and brings together equipment from the country's pioneering stations: dozens of domestic receivers, record players, magnetic-tape and steel-wire recorders and carbon, ribbon, condenser and dynamic microphones; a radio studio of the 1950s and 1960s has also been recreated here. The television area traces the technical and thematic evolution of television production. The present is represented by two studios, one for radio and one for television, where visitors can make and record their own broadcast, and by an interactive area with programmes organised by decade. The collection continues online in the RTP Virtual Museum. Visits are free and take place on weekdays only; groups must book in advance and may also visit on the first Saturday of each month, by appointment.
