Amadora Museum – Casal da Falagueira Museum Centre (headquarters)
In Falagueira, in the municipality of Amadora, near the western edge of Lisbon, the Casal da Falagueira Museum Centre has been the headquarters of the Amadora Museum since it opened to the public in 2008. The museum was created in April 1998 as the Municipal Archaeology Museum, chiefly to take in the collections gathered by ARQA – the Amadora Association for Archaeology and Heritage Protection over forty years of archaeological work in the area, and in March 2023 it was renamed the Amadora Museum, broadening its scope from prehistory to the 20th century. The building, listed as a monument of municipal interest, bears witness to Amadora's rural past and houses six exhibition areas, a shop, a specialist archaeology library and an archive of archaeological sites. The permanent exhibitions trace human settlement in the area: “Antes da Amadora” (Before Amadora) brings together the oldest remains, from the Palaeolithic onwards; “Amadora Rural” recalls the farming landscape of windmills and country estates that preceded the arrival of the railway in 1887; “Aqueduto das Águas Livres” presents the 18th-century aqueduct that crosses the municipality; and “A Aviação na Amadora” (Aviation in Amadora) remembers the Republic Aviation Squadron Group (G.E.A.R.), based there from 1919 to 1938. The centre also runs temporary exhibitions, guided visits to the municipality's archaeological heritage, workshops and talks.
