Quake
In Belém, the immersive museum of the 1755 earthquake: themed rooms, a simulator with shaking seats and the tsunami, backed by University of Lisbon science.
Quake – Lisbon Earthquake Museum
Quake is a themed experience that lets visitors see and feel the Great Lisbon Earthquake. On the morning of 1 November 1755, at around 9.40, a powerful earthquake struck the city and was followed by a tsunami with waves some five metres high. At Quake, the story unfolds over several rooms until a simulator, with shaking seats, recreates the earthquake and the tsunami in a safe setting; it is followed by a room devoted to other major earthquakes, such as San Francisco in 1906 and Tōhoku, in Japan, in 2011. The science behind it comes from the seismologists Susana Custódio and Luís Matias, lecturers at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon and researchers at the Instituto Dom Luiz, and from the historian André Canhoto Costa; the experience was created by the Dutch company Jora Vision, the building was designed by the Fragmentos studio and the Museu de Lisboa was a partner on the history. The reason Quake exists, say its creators, is for us to be better prepared for the next earthquake. The visit takes about an hour and a half, with content in Portuguese, English, Spanish and French.
