B-MAD, Berardo – Art Deco Museum
In Alcântara, B-MAD – Berardo Art Deco Museum opened to the public on 24 April 2021 in the former summer residence of the Marquis of Abrantes, built in the first half of the eighteenth century, whose main residence was the Santos Palace, now the French Embassy. In the early twentieth century the house was bought by Guilhermina Flores, mother of the physician António Flores, who in the following decade invited Raul Lino to enlarge it with two more floors, a tower with a belvedere and an imposing staircase; two decades later, Carlos Ramos designed pieces of furniture that are still there. The museum, a private initiative of the Associação de Colecções, shows works from the Berardo Collection illustrating the Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements, arranged in period settings that evoke a town house. Designers represented include Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann, Alfred Porteneuve, Jean-Michel Frank, Jacques Adnet, René Lalique and Jules Leleu, alongside the sculptor Ernesto Canto da Maya and the artist Eloy de Jesus Pereira, Ruhlmann's original drawings for the Casa de Serralves and silverware drawings from the former Ourivesaria Reis e Filhos in Porto. The house also has a shop and a garden with a terrace. Museum visits are always guided, every day between 10:30 and 17:30, subject to availability without booking.
