Portuguese Masonic Museum – Grémio Lusitano Palace
In the Grémio Lusitano Palace in Bairro Alto, the Portuguese Masonic Museum uses its collection to tell the story of Freemasonry in Portugal over the last two hundred and eighty years. The Grémio Lusitano, founded on 13 March 1879, bought the palace in November that year and moved in in May 1880; the Mannerist building gained an extra storey under an enlargement project approved in 1897 and retains polychrome tiles from the mid-17th century. Closed by order of the Minister of the Interior in 1930, the headquarters was confiscated after the 1935 law banning secret societies and handed over to the Portuguese Legion, being returned to the Grémio only after the 25 April revolution of 1974. The museum was inaugurated on 21 February 1986 and reopened on 16 September 2023, after museological refurbishment, with a new permanent exhibition in three parts: Symbolic, Daily Life and History, and High Degrees. It promotes the values of liberty, equality and fraternity through its permanent collection, temporary exhibitions and guided tours, and is a member of ICOM and AMMLA, the European association of Masonic museums, libraries and archives. It opens only on weekdays, in the afternoon.
