Health Museum – Santo António dos Capuchos Hospital
The Health Museum is managed and promoted by the Doutor Ricardo Jorge National Health Institute (INSA), whose statutes, approved in 2012, give it the task of preserving the memory of the health services by inventorying, conserving, exhibiting and publicising their heritage. Since April 2017 it has been on show in its future headquarters, the former Neurosurgery Department of the Santo António dos Capuchos Hospital, with the exhibition 800 Years of Health in Portugal, a chronological overview of the history of health in the country from the founding of the nation to the present day. In six stages, the display covers the first health services of the Middle Ages and the royal hospitals of the late fifteenth century, advances in pharmacopoeia and medicine in the early modern period, national public-health policies, the great technical and scientific innovations and the fight against endemic diseases in the twentieth century. The collections include sections devoted to tuberculosis, with religious art, photography and treatment apparatus, to malaria, urology, psychology and anaesthesia, the latter with more than a thousand items from the former Portuguese Museum of Anaesthesiology, donated in 2016. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions and each month highlights an Object of the Month, also available in the online inventory. Unaccompanied visits are possible only on Wednesdays; groups of at least five people are received by appointment.
