Faraday Museum – Instituto Superior Técnico, Electricity Pavilion
In the former Electricity Pavilion of Instituto Superior Técnico, on the Alameda campus, the Faraday Museum brings together some 600 historical scientific instruments and pieces of equipment, mostly from the 19th and 20th centuries. The idea arose around 2014, when professors Moisés Piedade and Carlos Ferreira Fernandes, of the Electronics Scientific Area of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, came across old equipment while clearing space and proposed organising an electronics museum; the collection began to be recovered and catalogued in January 2015, and its name, chosen by internal vote, honours the experimenter and science communicator Michael Faraday. Opened on 6 February 2017 in seven rooms, it now has ten rooms and a storeroom. Most of the collection comes from decades of teaching and research at Técnico in physics, especially electricity and magnetism, electrical engineering, electronics and communications, from radio and television to computers; the rest comes from donations by individuals, companies and former teachers and students. Alongside the historical pieces, the museum has interactive modules and frequently presents teaching experiments on the fundamental principles of physics, electrical engineering and electronics. It has no published opening hours: visits, aimed mainly at school groups, are by prior appointment with the secretariat.
