Egas Moniz Museum – Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon

The Egas Moniz Museum of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon was set up in 1957, when the Egas Moniz Study Centre – founded in 1950 and chaired by the neurologist himself, which until then had operated in premises attached to the Júlio de Matos Hospital – moved into the newly opened Santa Maria Teaching Hospital. Created with the support of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation to document the life and scientific work of the 1949 Nobel laureate in Physiology or Medicine, it is one of the University of Lisbon's museum collections that survive to this day and it keeps its original museography and scenography, strongly visual and documentary in character. Around four hundred objects are on display: manuscripts, scientific and literary books, photograph albums, clinical record books, diplomas, decorations and a facsimile of the Nobel Prize award document, the original of which is in the Egas Moniz House Museum in Avanca. Highlights include the reconstruction of Egas Moniz's consulting room at the Santa Marta Hospital and the instruments used in the first angiographies and leucotomies, such as the syringe, the Martins forceps and the leucotome, together with an extensive visual section on the discovery of angiography in 1927. Located on the sixth floor of the Faculty's Central Building, now under the University Neurology Clinic, it is open to the public by prior appointment only.
