João de Deus Museum – Bibliographic, Pedagogical and Artistic
The João de Deus Museum – Bibliographic, Pedagogical and Artistic – came into being after the proclamation of the Republic, when a group of republicans put to João de Deus Ramos, son of the poet and educator João de Deus, a project to spread their ideals; Afonso Lopes Vieira took to the press the idea of a building that would be both a monument to the poet-educator and a library in support of Portuguese culture. Designed by Raul Lino, with decorative paintings by Leal da Câmara, it was inaugurated on 12 January 1917 and is the headquarters of the Associação de Jardins-Escolas João de Deus, which was awarded the Order of Public Instruction for the museum’s centenary. The collection brings together correspondence and personal belongings of João de Deus and João de Deus Ramos, busts, paintings and drawings, and a historic library with many methods for teaching reading and arithmetic, manuscripts by Francisco Teixeira de Queiroz, letters from Maria Amália Vaz de Carvalho and a large collection of 19th- and 20th-century newspapers and periodicals. A true literary salon, it welcomed Aquilino Ribeiro, Hernâni Cidade and David Mourão-Ferreira for readings, lectures and concerts. Admission is free and the museum opens on weekdays only.
