Royal Treasure Museum
In the west wing of the Ajuda Palace, only completed in 2022, the Crown Jewels, the royal regalia, the gold of Brazil and the great silver of the Royal Household.
Royal Treasure Museum
The Royal Treasure Museum occupies the west wing of the Ajuda National Palace, the part of the palace that was never built and was only completed almost two centuries later, to a design by the architect João Carlos Santos. Opened on 1 June 2022, it permanently displays a large part of the former possessions of the Portuguese Royal Household. Part of the work was paid for with the compensation for the theft of six Crown jewels from an exhibition in The Hague in 2002 – jewels that were never recovered. The route takes in the Crown Jewels, created in 1827, the royal regalia – among them the royal crown made in Rio de Janeiro in 1817, a reminder that Portuguese kings were not crowned –, the gold and diamonds of Brazil, diplomatic gifts such as the Golden Rose given by Pope Gregory XVI to Queen Maria II, and the great silver services. The visit pairs well with the palace next door.
