Casa do Alentejo – Alverca Palace

On Rua das Portas de Santo Antão, the Casa do Alentejo occupies the former Paes do Amaral or Alverca Palace, probably built in the late 17th century and owned by the family of the Viscounts of Alverca. Between 1917 and 1919 part of the palace was turned into the capital's first casino, the Magestic Club, in works directed by the architect Silva Júnior that gave it the splendid appearance it still has today; later renamed Monumental Club, it drew patrons to its gaming rooms and to the parties in the Hall of Mirrors, and had already closed by 1928. In 1932 the building was leased to the Grémio Alentejano, an association founded on 10 June 1923 which, as the law then required, took the name Casa do Alentejo in 1939; the palace was bought from the family's descendants in 1981. A regional association recognised as being of public utility, it promotes Alentejo culture with book launches, poetry readings, temporary exhibitions, talks, food weeks and weeks devoted to the Alentejo's municipalities, cultural afternoons on Saturdays and dances on Sundays. Besides its halls, the building houses a library, a restaurant and a tavern.
