MACAM
On Rua da Junqueira, a 1701 palace turned into a museum in 2025: more than six hundred modern and contemporary artworks from the Armando Martins collection.
Armando Martins Museum of Contemporary Art
MACAM – the Armando Martins Museum of Contemporary Art is the newest major museum in Lisbon and presents itself as "the house of private collections". It occupies the Palace of the Counts of Ribeira Grande, on Rua da Junqueira, commissioned in 1701 by the Marquis of Nisa and bought in 1752 by the Count of Ribeira Grande; the palace, with a façade 110 metres long, survived the 1755 earthquake and served as a secondary school for much of the 20th century. After works begun in 2018, designed by the MetroUrbe studio for both the restoration and the new wing – clad in a white ceramic panel by Maria Ana Vasco Costa –, the museum opened to the public on 22 March 2025. It shares the building with a hotel, in an unusual model that brings together art and hospitality. The collection, begun by Armando Martins in 1974, gathers more than six hundred works by over 280 artists, from the late 19th century to the present day, spanning Portuguese and international art, and is shown in long-term and temporary exhibitions.
