Lumiar Cité – Maumaus

Lumiar Cité is the exhibition space of Maumaus, a non-profit cultural association founded in Lisbon in 1992 as Associação Maumaus – Centro de Contaminação Visual, which promotes the production, dissemination and discussion of knowledge on contemporary art. Since its beginnings, Maumaus has run a school of visual arts that hosts the Independent Study Programme, internationally recognised as an alternative within the landscape of art education; over the years it has also set up a publishing house, produced films and launched an international artists' residency programme, which takes place at Lumiar Cité itself. Located in Rua Tomás del Negro, in Alta de Lisboa, the space held its first exhibition in February 2009, Too Many Daddies, Mommies and Babies by Gabriel Abrantes. Since then it has hosted mainly solo exhibitions by Portuguese and foreign artists, often connected with film, the archive and critical thought – from Harun Farocki, Allan Sekula and Renée Green to Ângela Ferreira, Judith Barry, Ana Jotta or Ed Atkins –, some featuring works commissioned by Maumaus, and accompanied by conversations with the artists and guided tours. Supported by the Directorate-General for the Arts, Lisbon City Council and the Lumiar parish council, it opens from Wednesday to Sunday in the afternoon, or by appointment.
