Appleton – independent contemporary art space
Housed on a ground floor in Rua Acácio Paiva, in Alvalade, Appleton was born in 2007 as Appleton Square and, since September 2018, has operated as an independent, non-profit space devoted to contemporary art, in a position it sees as complementary to that of commercial galleries and other institutions. It presents itself as a place for experimentation and learning, open to the most diverse forms of artistic expression: the visual arts, video art, performance, dance, cinema, theatre and music. The programme is divided into three strands: SQUARE, associated with the white cube of the ground-floor room; BOX, more experimental in character, which mostly takes place in the room on level -1; and GARAGEM, a nomadic programme conceived by the musicians Manuel Mota and David Maranha and devoted to music and sound art. In 2020 came the Appleton podcast, a series of conversations led by Vera Appleton about the players in the Portuguese art system, and the Sandbox education service, which works with families, schools and universities; since 2022 the space has also hosted artists in residence. It has had the support of Lisbon City Council since 2020 and, since 2022, has belonged to the Portuguese Contemporary Art Network (RPAC). Exhibitions can be visited from Tuesday to Saturday, in the afternoon.
