The Associação de Gravura Água-Forte grew out of the meeting of a small group of printmakers with a simple aim: to make and promote printmaking. In 1999 nine artists – Amélia Soares, Fátima Ferreira, Helena Cunha, Inez Wijnhorst, Isabel Pyrrait, Madalena Fonseca, Richard de Luchi, Teresa Pato and Tereza Morgado – set up a shared studio on the ground floor of an old house between Estrela and São Bento; it all began with a notice advertising a second-hand press pinned to the wall of the Cooperativa de Gravadores Portugueses, and the association was formally founded in 2000. The studio is equipped for intaglio, screen printing and lithography, with an etching press, a darkroom for photogravure and a cabinet for aquatint, and it explores less toxic materials. Next to the studio, a small gallery periodically shows Portuguese and international prints, in themed and solo exhibitions. The association also runs workshops in techniques such as linocut, burin engraving, drypoint and mezzotint, exchanges with foreign printmakers – especially from Japan – and group exhibitions in other museums, such as its 25th-anniversary show at the Museu do Oriente. It now has thirteen members, five of them founders. The gallery is open to the public only when exhibitions are on, from Tuesday to Saturday, in the afternoon.
