Fidelidade Arte – Loreto Palace (Chiado 8)

Fidelidade Arte is the contemporary art exhibition space of the Fidelidade insurance group, at number 8 Largo do Chiado, next door to the São Carlos National Theatre and A Brasileira café. The gallery opened in 2002 as the company's contribution to the rehabilitation of the Chiado, and was called Fidelidade Chiado8 Arte Contemporânea until 2019, when it took its present name. It occupies the Loreto Palace, also known as the Ferreira Pinto Basto Palace, rebuilt in 1791 by João Francisco Higino Dias Pereira on the ruins of a large house destroyed by the 1755 earthquake. The building has had an unusually eventful life: residence of the French ambassadors Lannes and Junot, part of Napoleon's army headquarters in 1808, home of José Ferreira Pinto Basto, who remodelled the main floor with ceilings attributed to Cirilo Volkmar Machado, a hotel frequented by Almeida Garrett and Alexandre Herculano, seat of the Ministry of the Kingdom and, from 1913, of the insurer A Mundial, with alterations designed by the architect Porfírio Pardal Monteiro between 1944 and 1950. The programme, with free admission, presents Portuguese and international art projects and includes a partnership with Culturgest begun in 2006; since opening, the gallery has hosted more than 65 exhibitions and over 150,000 visitors.
