Kunsthalle Lissabon
In Penha de França, an independent, free kunsthalle showing contemporary art on Thursday to Saturday afternoons.
Kunsthalle Lissabon
Founded in 2009 by the curators Luís Silva and João Mourão, Kunsthalle Lissabon was created to explore and rethink the institutional models of contemporary art. Since then it has been devoted to producing and presenting exhibitions through innovative artistic and curatorial practices, in work that is deliberately multidisciplinary, collaborative and transparent. Housed on Rua José Sobral Cid, in Penha de França, the institution is supported by the Directorate-General for the Arts and the Vasco Collection. One of the cornerstones of its programme is equity in artistic representation: the Kunsthalle seeks to give visibility to women, non-binary, trans and racialised artists, both locally and internationally, and in recent years its programme has been led mostly by women artists and by practices that question norms of gender, identity and representation. All exhibitions and activities are free of charge, a choice made to lower the economic and social barriers to access to art. Alongside the exhibitions, it runs a mediation programme with guided tours and KL Kids, with children's workshops designed in dialogue with each show, as well as its own editions and a library. The space opens only from Thursday to Saturday, in the afternoon, or by appointment.
