In Venteira, in the centre of Amadora, the municipality bordering Lisbon, the Artur Bual Municipal Gallery was founded in 1980 as the Amadora Municipal Gallery and is regarded as one of the pioneers of municipal gallery activity in Portugal. In 1991 it received the Portuguese Society of Authors' award for the best municipal gallery in the visual arts and, in 1995, the prize for the best national exhibition, awarded by the critics of the Academia das Artes, for its show of the painter António Inverno. In 1999 it took the name of Artur Bual, in homage to the painter who introduced gestural abstraction to Portugal. Two decades of activity built up a municipal art collection that brings together names such as Bual himself, Cruzeiro Seixas, Manuel Cargaleiro, Francisco Relógio, Rogério Ribeiro, António Carmo and Paula Rego. Besides exhibitions, the gallery has promoted projects such as the 0 Figura publication, paying tribute to artists including José Garcês and José Ruy, the Open-Air Sculpture Show and the Amadora Contemporary Art Fair. In autumn 2026 it hosts two exhibitions from the Amadora BD comics festival, on show until 13 December. Admission is free.
