Galeria Quadrum – Lisbon Municipal Galleries (Coruchéus)

Galeria Quadrum occupies the ground floor of the south wing of the Coruchéus complex in Alvalade, designed by Fernando Peres Guimarães and opened in 1971. The space was conceived as a restaurant and bar serving the 50 municipal studios on the upper floors, but as early as 1973 it was turned into a gallery at the suggestion of Dulce d'Agro, an artist who became one of the country's most important gallerists. Its glass façades demanded unconventional solutions from the outset, such as a movable aluminium structure with felt-covered panels. Between the revolution of 25 April 1974 and the early 1980s, Quadrum was a key venue for experimentation: it presented performances by Ana Hatherly, João Vieira, Gina Pane and Ulrike Rosenbach, visual poetry by E. M. de Melo e Castro and Salette Tavares, installations by Ana Vieira and Alberto Carneiro, and new research in painting by Noronha da Costa, Álvaro Lapa and Ângelo de Sousa. Dulce d'Agro ran it until the mid-1990s and, since 2010, the gallery has been managed and programmed by the Municipal Galleries, a network of five spaces without a collection of their own. It opens only during exhibitions: after "O Bestiário" by Carla Cabanas, which closed on 11 October 2026, the next, "Fragmentos" by Cristina Ataíde, opens on 13 November.
