Julião Sarmento Pavilion

The Julião Sarmento Pavilion is one of Lisbon's newest contemporary art centres, opened on 4 June 2025 on Avenida da Índia in Belém. It occupies a former food warehouse owned by the city, restored and adapted by the architect João Luís Carrilho da Graça, with a visual identity by Pedro Falcão. It houses the collection of the artist Julião Sarmento (Lisbon, 1948-2021), some 1,500 works of art – painting, drawing, sculpture, video and installation – gathered by the artist over his lifetime. The opening exhibition, “TAKE 1”, showed works by names such as Marina Abramović, Ernesto Neto, Robert Morris, Juan Muñoz, Cristina Iglesias, Rui Chafes, Richard Long, Lawrence Weiner, Ângela Ferreira, John Baldessari and Rita McBride. Run by EGEAC and directed by Isabel Carlos, the pavilion takes as its motto a sentence that sums up the spirit of the collection: “A work of art should above all question rather than make statements.” The programme alternates exhibitions drawn from the collection with shows by invited artists, and the white building with its large arched windows is itself a good reason to visit. The Avenida da Índia Gallery is right next door.
