Loreto Church
On Largo do Chiado, the church of the Italian community, founded in 1518 by merchants and rebuilt after 1755.
Church of Nossa Senhora do Loreto – Church of the Italians
The Church of Nossa Senhora do Loreto, known as the Church of the Italians, stands on Largo do Chiado, opposite the Church of Encarnação, and is the church of Lisbon’s Italian community. Its origin lies in a donation: on 8 April 1518, the canons of St John Lateran accepted the land offered by Italian merchants living in the city, with privileges to build a church there dedicated to Our Lady of Loreto. The present building dates from the reconstruction after the earthquake of 1755, attributed to Joaquim António dos Reis Zuzarte, José da Costa e Silva and Manuel Caetano de Sousa, with a design of 1785, in a Pombaline neoclassical style. In 2018 it was the subject of an intervention by the Rebelo de Andrade studio, which added a suspended ellipse above the nave. Turismo de Lisboa gives the hours as 9:00 to 13:30 and 16:00 to 20:00, Monday to Saturday, and 8:30 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 21:00 on Sunday, with no admission price stated. These times correspond mainly to the church being open for worship; no separate visiting timetable was found, nor official confirmation of who manages the church.
