Parish Church of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação da Ameixoeira
The Church of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação da Ameixoeira stands on Estrada da Ameixoeira, in the old rural core of Santa Clara. A chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Funchal is recorded as having been built on the site in 1276, and on 6 June 1536 the parish was created, with a church built on the site of the old chapel. In 1664 the church was enlarged or rebuilt by royal decree of Afonso VI, and between 1682 and 1685 the chancel was built, paid for with alms from Pedro II and the Count of Vimioso. The earthquake of 1755 caused great damage and the date 1760 appears on the door leaves, with a bell tower attached to the facade. The interior has a single nave, a choir loft with eighteenth-century azulejos, a painted coffered ceiling with the central composition "The Incarnation" and blue azulejo panels showing scenes from the life of the Virgin and the Adoration of the Magi and of the Shepherds. It has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1993. According to the parish, it opens before services, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, and closes after them; there are no visiting hours outside those times.
