Mother Church of Póvoa de Santo Adrião (Igreja Matriz)

In the old core of Póvoa de Santo Adrião, a parish in the municipality of Odivelas on the northern edge of Lisbon, the Igreja Matriz is a 16th-century building, now hidden among the blocks of flats that have grown up around it. The exact date of its foundation is unknown: the oldest tombstone bears the year 1546 and the records only begin in 1564. Built on a longitudinal plan, with a single nave, a rectangular chancel and a bell tower on the left of the façade, it keeps its main portal and holy-water stoup from the Manueline period. The 17th and 18th centuries left visible traces in the painting and carved frame of the Altar of Our Lady of Sorrows, in the sundial dated 1742 and in the chancel, rebuilt at the end of the 1700s. The nave is lined with green chequered tiles from the 17th century, and the Chapel of St Anthony, clad in polychrome tiles of the same period, has a gilded carved altarpiece with paintings on wood of the Annunciation and the Ascension. The chancel is dominated by the large canvas of the Last Supper, painted by Pedro Alexandrino in 1802, together with his canvases of the Four Doctors of the Church. Classified as a national monument in 1970, it is still a working parish church and has no published visiting hours.
