Church of the Former Arroios Convent – Nossa Senhora da Nazaré
The Church of the Former Arroios Convent stands on Rua Quirino da Fonseca, beside Praça do Chile. In 1705 the Conventual College of the Society of Jesus was founded there, under the invocation of Nossa Senhora da Nazaré, funded by Catherine of Braganza, widow of Charles II of England; the chapel was commissioned from the architect João Antunes and the college was intended to prepare the Jesuit priests who left for the missions in India. In 1756 it became a convent of Conceptionist nuns. After the dissolution of the religious orders in 1834 and the death of the last nun in 1890, the building was annexed in 1892 by the Hospital de São José and became the Arroios Hospital, which closed in 1992. The church, cruciform in plan and covered by a dome, has a doorway on its facade bearing the arms of Portugal and England. It has been classified as a Monument of Public Interest since 2012. The rest of the building is vacant, but the church was handed over to the worship of the Ukrainian community of Arroios. It opens only for services and has no published visiting hours; visitor access should be arranged with the community.
