Church of Santo Estêvão de Alfama

The Church of Santo Estêvão, in the heart of Alfama, is a Mannerist and Baroque church whose foundation dates back to the middle of the twelfth century. It stands out for the originality of its plan, of simple geometry, rectangular with cut corners. It was rebuilt in 1733 in Baroque style, but the symmetry that characterised it was lost in the 1755 earthquake, which destroyed one of its bell towers. The church was repaired and reopened, and underwent a further restoration in the 1830s. It stands in the square of the same name and belongs to the parish of Alfama, forming part of the Baroque Route promoted by Turismo de Lisboa. The church is not open continuously: Turismo de Lisboa lists visits on Tuesdays and Thursdays and on Saturdays, from 16:00 to 18:00, and on Sundays, from 10:00 to 12:30, hours that may change and should be confirmed on the telephone number given before going. Opening is therefore limited to service times and a few hours a week.
