Parish Church of São Sebastião da Pedreira

In Largo de São Sebastião da Pedreira, the mother church was ordered to be built in 1652 in honour of Saint Sebastian and is one of the most notable Baroque churches in Lisbon. Access is by a side staircase. The church has a single nave and a chancel, and the main façade, facing west, is topped by a triangular pediment with an oculus, flanked by two bell towers with pyramidal roofs, and has a portal whose medallion bears the saint's crown and arrows. Inside, four chapels, paintings of scenes from the New Testament and of the Apostles, tile wainscoting and gilded woodwork accompany tile panels with episodes from the life of Saint Sebastian and Latin captions. The barrel vault of the nave carries a nineteenth-century painting by João Câncio de Sousa showing the saint's ascent to heaven. In the chancel, the altarpiece has twisted columns with vine stems, and at its entrance lies the tomb of D. João Bermudes, Patriarch of Alexandria and Ethiopia. The sacristy, from the first half of the eighteenth century, preserves chequered tile dados. It has been a Property of Public Interest since 1954. The parish publishes Masses on weekdays at 19:00, on Saturdays at 18:00 and on Sundays at 11:00 and 18:00.
