Church of São José dos Carpinteiros and Casa dos Vinte e Quatro
On Rua de São José, the Church of São José dos Carpinteiros is the seat of the former brotherhood of carpenters and masons. The church, apart from the façade and the chancel, originated in a hermitage built in 1545, and the group of buildings at numbers 64 to 100 of the street was raised in the eighteenth century. Longitudinal in plan, it has a doorway surmounted by a medallion of Saint Joseph, plaques with reliefs alluding to the tools of the mason and the carpenter and, on the left, a bell tower. The interior, a single nave with a painted vault, shows eighteenth-century polychrome gilded altarpieces in the transept chapels, tile dados with scenes from the life of the patron saint, a rosewood screen and, in the chancel, the eighteenth-century group of the Holy Family. The two sacristies are of interest, with blue and white tiles and a washbasin bearing the guild's coat of arms. The complex also includes the Casa de Mesa, known as the Casa dos Vinte e Quatro, and the Casa do Despacho, with its marble staircase. The complex has been a Property of Public Interest since 1978. The church opens mainly in the mornings, on weekdays and at weekends, but it is wise to confirm hours with the parish.
