São Miguel Church
On an Alfama square, a Mannerist and Baroque church rebuilt in 1673-1720, with gilded woodwork and canvases attributed to Bento Coelho da Silveira.
Church of São Miguel de Alfama
The Church of São Miguel stands in the square of the same name, in Alfama, and is a Mannerist and Baroque church whose foundation dates back to the middle of the twelfth century. The medieval church was badly damaged and was completely rebuilt between 1673 and 1720, so it largely escaped the effects of the 1755 earthquake. Inside, the gilded woodwork, the paintings by José Ferreira de Araújo and sixteen framed canvases, some attributed to Bento Coelho da Silveira, stand out. It belongs to the parish of São Miguel, in the Patriarchate of Lisbon, and is part of the Baroque Route promoted by Turismo de Lisboa, which gives the church as founded in the middle of the twelfth century and entirely rebuilt in the Baroque period, and lists visits from Monday to Saturday, from 10:00 to 18:00, and on Sundays from 08:00 to 10:00, but the church is subject to opening restrictions linked to worship, so the hours should be confirmed on the telephone number given before visiting.
