Conceição Velha Church
In the Baixa, a church with a surviving 16th-century Manueline portal, rebuilt in 1770 after the earthquake.
Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição Velha
The Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição Velha stands on Rua da Alfândega, between Campo das Cebolas and Terreiro do Paço. The first church, linked to the Order of Christ, dates back to 1502, when King Manuel I handed it over to the friars; it occupied the site of the old synagogue of the Judiaria Grande. Destroyed by the earthquake of 1755, it was left out of the Pombaline reconstruction plan: the friars were given the site of the Misericórdia church, rebuilt in 1770 by Francisco António Ferreira, which took the name Conceição Velha. The present building keeps the Manueline side portal, two Manueline windows and a relief of Our Lady of Mercy, reused from the original church; the main façade ends in a triangular pediment and the interior has a single nave with a choir loft, marbled azulejo panels and a stucco vault. The building also appears in the cultural heritage inventory as the Church of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa. It belongs to the Patriarchate of Lisbon and, since 2019, has hosted a cultural programme including exhibitions and organ recitals. No current official visiting timetable was found, so it is advisable to check that the church is open before going.
