Church of Santa Catarina (Paulistas Church) and Museum Unit of the Paulistas Convent

The Church of Santa Catarina, also known as the Paulistas Church, stands on Calçada do Combro and belonged to the convent of the Hermits of São Paulo da Serra de Ossa, founded in 1647. The church was built in the second half of the seventeenth century, under the invocation of the Santíssimo Sacramento, and only in the nineteenth century, after the damage of the 1755 earthquake and remodelling, did it take the dedication to Saint Catherine. In 1835, with the suppression of the religious orders, it became the parish church of Santa Catarina, a role it still fills. It has been classified as a National Monument since 1918. Highlights include the stucco ceiling with Rococo decoration, the large gilded wood organ, the seventeenth-century stalls of the upper choir, the paintings by Bento Coelho da Silveira and the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Atocha, which the azulejo painter Gabriel del Barco offered to the church in 1681. The Museum Unit of the Paulistas Convent, under the parish’s care, preserves and displays the church’s cultural heritage and promotes visits to the premises of the former convent. It was not possible to confirm from an official source the current visiting hours or whether the museum unit is open, so contacting the parish is recommended.
