Church of São Domingos – Parish Church of Santa Justa e Rufina

Between Rossio and Praça da Figueira, the Church of São Domingos belonged to Lisbon's first Dominican convent, founded in 1241 and built in the thirteenth century on the orders of King Sancho II. Building works, alterations, earthquakes and fires completely changed the medieval structure. On the convent's grounds, the so-called Horta dos Frades, the Royal Hospital of All Saints was built from 1492. Badly shaken by the 1755 earthquake, the convent was radically transformed by the plan for rebuilding the Baixa and, in the nineteenth century, after the religious orders were abolished, part of the complex was demolished to open Rua de Dom Antão de Almada and Travessa Nova de São Domingos. The church hosted national and royal ceremonies, from funerals to royal baptisms and weddings, but also witnessed the darker side of history: it was from here that those condemned by the Inquisition set out in procession to be executed in Rossio. In 1959 a violent fire destroyed almost the entire interior and the roof, and the marks of the fire are still visible in the cracked stones, alongside the chancel designed by the architect Ludovice. The seat of the parish of Santa Justa e Rufina, it remains open for worship; visiting hours are not published by any official source.
