Parish Church of Santiago (Church of São Tiago and São Martinho)

The Church of Santiago stands on Rua de Santiago, on the slope below São Jorge Castle, and is the parish church of the former parish of the same name. According to some authors, the original church dates from the beginning of the Portuguese nation, in the twelfth century; in the sixteenth century, Braunius's panorama of Lisbon shows it with three naves and a bell tower on the left of the facade. The present building was built between 1668 and 1670 by the architect João Nunes Tinoco, was damaged by the earthquake of 1755 and was rebuilt from 1773, with further restoration and conservation works in 1838. It has a single nave and a chancel, with a simply designed facade in which the decoration is concentrated on the doorway, the window above it and the curved pediment, and a bell tower attached on the right. Inside, the nave has a panelled ceiling and there is a three-bay side chapel covered by a vault and a dome. It has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1996. It remains in religious use and opening is limited: no visiting hours are published, so it is advisable to contact the parish before visiting.
