Santa Luzia Church
Beside the Santa Luzia viewpoint, an eighteenth-century Latin-cross church, a National Monument and seat of the Order of Malta in Portugal.
Church of Santa Luzia and São Brás
The Church of Santa Luzia, also called the Church of Santa Luzia and São Brás, stands in the square of the same name, next to the Santa Luzia viewpoint, in Alfama, and is classified as a National Monument. Tradition places its origin in the time of Afonso Henriques, although it is unclear whether it was built by knights of the Order of Saint John of the Hospital, later the Order of Malta. The present building dates from the eighteenth century, remodelled after the 1755 earthquake under the responsibility of the architect Mateus Vicente de Oliveira, and has a Latin-cross plan. On the exterior, tile panels depict scenes of the capture of Lisbon from the Moors and of Praça do Comércio before the earthquake. The church is today the national seat of the Assembly of Portuguese Knights of the Order of Malta. It was not possible to find visiting hours from an official source, so opening should be regarded as limited and confirmed with the Order of Malta or the Patriarchate of Lisbon before going, especially outside service times.
