Parish Church of Charneca – Church of São Bartolomeu

The Church of São Bartolomeu da Charneca stands on Largo dos Defensores da República, in a landscaped square raised above the street, opposite the parish cross. It was built in the seventeenth century on a chapel dedicated to the Holy Spirit. It is a rectangular building with a nave, a chancel and a bell tower on the right, whitewashed facades, a doorway with a straight lintel and a triangular pediment, and a large window above. On the right, a gate leads to the former parish cemetery. The interior decoration is Baroque: the nave ceiling has panels painted by Bento Coelho da Silveira, with scenes from the life of the patron saint, and the azulejos are attributed to António de Oliveira Bernardes, from the eighteenth century. In 1758 the Parish Memoirs described it as a single-nave church lined with azulejos, with five altars. The earthquake of 1755 damaged it. In 2007 two mortuary chapels were built on the site of the former cemetery. It was classified as a Monument of Public Interest in 2012. It is a parish church in use; no visiting hours are published, so it is advisable to contact the parish.
