Church of São Cristóvão

The Church of São Cristóvão stands in the square of the same name, in the heart of Mouraria, and has medieval origins, although the present building is mainly of the seventeenth century. It escaped the worst of the 1755 earthquake and holds more than thirty paintings by Bento Coelho da Silveira, together with sixteenth- and seventeenth-century images, among them the Miranda Chapel. EGEAC included the church in the guided visits of its Christian Mouraria programme in 2018, at a time when reconstruction works were under way. The church’s heritage was the subject of a campaign to restore its canvases, supported by Lisbon City Council and a Participatory Budget project, and the church was included in the World Monuments Fund watch list of endangered monuments in 2016. It was not possible to confirm from an official source the current visiting hours or the state of the works, so opening should be regarded as limited and confirmed with the parish before going. Turismo de Lisboa does not publish hours for this site, and press indications differ from one another.
