Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Parish Centre

On Rua Camilo Castelo Branco, the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is one of the landmarks of modernist religious architecture in Lisbon. Built between 1962 and 1970, it is the work of the architects Nuno Teotónio Pereira, Vasco Lobo, Nuno Portas and Vítor Figueiredo, in a complex that comprises church and parish centre, owned by the Patriarchate of Lisbon. It received the 1975 Valmor Prize, awarded jointly with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. The press reported its classification as a national monument in 2010. The building is an example of the movement for the renewal of religious art in Portugal and includes, besides the place of worship, rooms and services supporting the parish community. According to Público, the complex also includes a crypt, mortuary chapels, an auditorium and socio-cultural spaces, and the design is the work of architects of the Movement for the Renewal of Religious Art. It is open for worship, and visits are made mainly during service times, so it is advisable to contact the parish, on +351 213 560 619, before visiting.
