Church of Nossa Senhora da Penha de França – former convent

On the hilltop of Penha de França, the church that gives the parish its name is the most visible trace of the former convent built there in the late sixteenth century. According to the record held by the Centro Nacional de Cultura, the church was founded in 1597 to a design by the architect Teodósio Frias, and the convent was built in 1604 and altered in 1785. The parish was entrusted by the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon to a religious congregation, according to the parish centre's page, and the church remains in use for worship. The Centro Nacional de Cultura lists the complex as material heritage of religious architecture from the modern period, the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, and the press reported in 2017 the classification of the former convent as a Monument of Public Interest, including its integrated movable heritage. It stands in Largo da Penha de França, at the top of the parish of the same name. The official sources consulted do not publish visiting hours: the church functions mainly around parish services, so it is advisable to contact the parish before planning a visit.
