Church of Nossa Senhora de Jesus (Parish Church of Nossa Senhora das Mercês) – Convent of Jesus

The Church of Nossa Senhora de Jesus, also known as the Mercês Church and the Parish Church of Nossa Senhora das Mercês, stands on Largo de Jesus, in the parish of Misericórdia, and was the church of the former Convent of Jesus. The present building is largely the result of the reconstruction that followed the 1755 earthquake, which destroyed the earlier church, and its façade reflects the taste of the last decades of the eighteenth century. This phase of the work has been attributed to the architect Joaquim de Oliveira, the subject of a study published in the journal Rossio: Estudos de Lisboa. Inside, unlike other Baroque churches in Bairro Alto and Chiado, gilded woodwork gives way to a set of high-quality tilework, with a vault lined with panels of 1714, designed by António de Oliveira Bernardes, one of the masters of Portuguese azulejo, which evoke the Litanies of the Virgin. The church remains in use as a parish church, tied to the worship of the Patriarchal Diocese of Lisbon. It was not possible to confirm the visiting hours from an official source, so it is advisable to check with the parish before visiting outside service times.
