Aljube Museum – Resistance and Freedom

Next to the Cathedral, the Aljube Museum – Resistance and Freedom occupies the building of the former Aljube prison, a name that comes from the Arabic al-jubb, a dry well, cistern or dungeon. The building dates back to the Roman and Islamic periods and was almost always a prison: an ecclesiastical jail, a women's prison and, between 1928 and 1965, a political prison of the Estado Novo regime. Created in 2015 and run by EGEAC, the museum is devoted to the memory of the struggle against the dictatorship that ruled from 1926 to 1974 and to the resistance for freedom and democracy. The long-term exhibition begins on floor -1, with archaeological finds from the site, including traces of the Roman occupation, and on floor 0, with the memorial to the political prisoners and the history of the building. Floor 1 describes the regime, censorship, the political police and the political courts; floor 2 deals with the organisation of the resistance, interrogation, torture and isolation in the curros, the prison's tiny cells; floor 3 covers colonialism, the liberation struggles and the colonial war, ending with 25 April 1974. The museum also has a temporary exhibition space, an auditorium, a documentation centre and an education service, and the balcony on the top floor looks out over the river and the Cathedral.
