Church of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação

The Church of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação stands on Largo do Chiado and is a parish church, within the protected Pombaline Lisbon area. The earthquake of 1755 and the fire that followed destroyed it completely. The reconstruction was designed by Manuel Caetano de Sousa and the church reopened for worship in 1784, still unfinished; a fire in 1802 forced another closure, and it was only in 1806 that it welcomed worshippers again. The building combines Pombaline, late Baroque and Rococo elements. The interior is mostly faced in marble and the nave ceiling has a painting of the Annunciation; on the high altar is the sculpture of Our Lady of the Incarnation, attributed to the school of Machado de Castro. On the façade are two seventeenth-century sculptures that belonged to the old Porta de Santa Catarina. The church faces the Church of Loreto, on Largo do Chiado, a few steps from Baixa-Chiado metro station. According to Turismo de Lisboa, it is open Monday to Friday, 7:30 to 12:30 and 14:30 to 20:00, on Saturday, 9:00 to 12:30 and 15:00 to 20:00, and on Sunday, 9:00 to 13:30 and 15:00 to 20:00.
