Church of Santa Maria Madalena

The Church of the Madalena stands on Largo da Madalena, in the parish of Santa Maria Maior, and is one of the parishes of the Patriarchate of Lisbon. The first temple dated from the twelfth century, but the earthquake of 1755 destroyed it completely and the church was rebuilt soon afterwards, reusing older elements. What survives of the medieval and Manueline building is the main portal, with a trilobed arch and Manueline plant and heraldic decoration, and it is this element that is classified as cultural heritage. The interior is the result of the eighteenth-century reconstruction and remains in use for the worship of the parish, which welcomes communities of many origins. The Patriarchate of Lisbon records a Sunday Mass at 12:00 in the church and, on the last Sunday of each month, at 16:00, in the foreign-language chaplaincies. The church is also part of the visiting routes through the Baixa and the Sé promoted by the Patriarchate, such as the Itinerários da Fé of 2019. No current official visiting timetable, separate from the times of services, was found, so it is advisable to check that the church is open before visiting.
