Parish Church of Ajuda – Convent of Nossa Senhora da Boa Hora

The Boa Hora Church, also known as the parish church of Ajuda, dominates Largo da Boa Hora. It was the convent of the Discalced Augustinian Hermits, founded in 1758 to replace the one of the same name in the city centre, from which the friars had been expelled and which gave way to the Boa Hora Court. The first stone of the new church was laid in April 1766 and the church was dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Boa Hora and Santa Rita. The nave azulejos were fitted in 1800-1805. With the dissolution of the religious orders in 1834 the conventual church became the parish church of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda, and in 1870-1872 it was almost entirely rebuilt. In 1892 the Military Hospital moved into the conventual buildings. The building, of Pombaline architecture, combines Baroque and Neoclassical elements; its historic azulejos, stucco work and Iberian organ stand out. It has been classified as a Monument of Public Interest since 2013. According to the parish, the church is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 13:00 and 16:00 to 19:30, on Saturdays from 10:00 to 13:00 and 15:00 to 19:30, and on Sundays from 9:00 to 13:00 and 16:00 to 19:30.
