Hangar – Centre for Artistic Research

Hangar is a centre for artistic research on Rua Damasceno Monteiro, on the slope of Graça that faces Anjos. An independent space run by artists and curators, it is a project of Xerem, a non-profit cultural association, and grew out of a group of artists, curators and producers wanting to create the conditions for artistic research and creation in close contact with the city of Lisbon. A single building brings together an exhibition room, artist and curatorial residencies, artists' studios, a photographic darkroom and a sound studio, and it also organises workshops, talks, conferences and walks with the local community. Starting from the idea of bringing together different geographies, cultures and identities, its programme favours cross-disciplinary projects in the visual arts, treats urban Lisbon as its field of action and runs an international residency programme with a network of partners abroad. From 30 September 2026 to 30 January 2027 it presents the installation "After us there will be a horizon for the new birds" by Phoebe Boswell, curated by Renée Mussai. The exhibition room is open to the public only on certain days of the week, and the building also houses Café Ni'lin, a Palestinian restaurant.
