Pavilhão Branco (White Pavilion) – Lisbon Municipal Galleries

In the gardens of the Palácio Pimenta, an early 18th-century building that houses the headquarters of the Lisbon Museum, the Pavilhão Branco (White Pavilion) is one of Lisbon City Council's contemporary art galleries. Its origins lie in Lisbon European Capital of Culture 1994: as the palace could not accommodate all the exhibitions in the programme, the Pavilhão Preto (Black Pavilion) was built in the gardens first and, a year later, on 26 July 1995, the Pavilhão Branco opened with the exhibition “Azulejo Gráfico”. Designed by the Italian architect Daniela Ermano, it is a neo-modern, box-shaped volume about 26 metres long, 10 wide and 10 high, with two floors totalling some 372 square metres of exhibition space. Its largely glazed façades open onto the garden, its trees and the animals that live there, giving visitors the feeling of being inside and outside at the same time, which lends itself to site-specific projects. Since it opened it has been devoted to temporary exhibitions of contemporary art, and in early 2010 it became part of the Municipal Galleries, now run by EGEAC.
