Galeria Diferença – Diferença Comunicação Visual cooperative
Galeria Diferença is the exhibition space of Diferença Comunicação Visual, a non-profit cultural cooperative founded on 30 January 1979 by Ernesto de Sousa, Helena Almeida, Irene Buarque, António Palolo, Monteiro Gil, José Conduto, José Carvalho, Fernanda Pissarro, Marília Viegas and Maria Rolão. The founding group grew out of Alternativa Zero, the exhibition organised by Ernesto de Sousa in 1977 that marked a turning point in Portuguese contemporary art, and it was soon joined by artists such as Alberto Carneiro, Julião Sarmento, Ana Vieira, Eduardo Nery and João Vieira. In 1985 the cooperative was granted public-interest status and bought the first floor, basement and courtyard of no. 42 Rua de São Filipe Néri, near Rato, where it was already a tenant; the new gallery, designed by the architects Nuno Teotónio Pereira and Artur Rosa with the engineer Câncio Martins, opened in 1987. Artists such as Pedro Calapez, Cabrita Reis, José Pedro Croft, Rui Chafes and Rui Sanches showed here early in their careers. Today the gallery runs contemporary art exhibitions in two rooms, the Triângulo and the Quadrado, and the first-floor studios host courses and workshops in engraving, screen printing, lithography and photography, also open to artists who are not members of the cooperative.
