Galeria Zé dos Bois – Palácio Baronesa de Almeida

Galeria Zé dos Bois, known by its initials ZDB, is a non-profit cultural association founded through civic initiative on 27 October 1994 by fifteen artists seeking an alternative to the commercial and institutional exclusion they faced in the early 1990s. First conceived as a studio and showcase for its founders, it opened up to outside artists about a year later and became a platform for a whole generation and for practices that found no place elsewhere. Today it occupies a 2,500-square-metre cultural centre in the former Palácio Baronesa de Almeida, on Rua da Barroca, in the heart of Bairro Alto. Devoted to the creation, production and promotion of contemporary art, ZDB produces exhibitions, often of newly commissioned work, and hosts or co-produces more than 150 projects a year, including residencies, theatre, dance, film and music, a field in which the ZDBmüzique programme has become a benchmark. Artists it has worked with include João Maria Gusmão & Pedro Paiva, Kenneth Anger, Kim Gordon and Animal Collective. The exhibitions, supported by an education service set up in 2005, open from Monday to Saturday in the early evening, and the building also houses a bookshop and a roof terrace.
