Galeria da Boavista – Lisbon Municipal Galleries

In an old part of the city, Galeria da Boavista occupies the ground and first floors of a building put up between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, whose present façade, with its entrance and shop window decorated in red ironwork, dates from a 1910 alteration project. The shop was first a goldsmith's belonging to the building's owner, Alberto Carlos Florentino, and from 1946 it housed the Sociedade de Aços e Metais. Lisbon City Council bought the building in 2000 and restored it between 2004 and 2009; thereafter the gallery was lent to various cultural bodies and agents, who staged exhibitions, performances and concerts there, and it also housed the NOTE – Architecture Gallery and Syntax galleries. In 2016 it joined the Municipal Galleries, a network run by EGEAC, without a collection of its own, which also includes Pavilhão Branco, Galeria Quadrum, the East Tower of the Cordoaria Nacional and Galeria Avenida da Índia. Its free programme favours contemporary creation in exhibitions of varying length, and the same building houses the Boavista Residencies for artists. The gallery opens only during exhibitions: the most recent, a show by João Penalva spread over several venues, ended in July 2026 and no new exhibition has been announced.
